What Have I Been Running?

How a solo professional services business gained the confidence of how their business was running.

Deliverable P&L Statements
Engagement Type Blossoming

The Problem

They came to Burgeoning Bridge wanting help in piecing together their P&L statement which had been neglected for 3 years.

They understood that strong financial data was important but the task to clean it up seemed overwhelming. They wanted to have a better understanding of their business so they saw a clear path to the future.

The issue wasn't a lack of revenue. It was three years of financial history that had never been organized into anything they could actually read. Without structure there was no way to see what the business had actually done.

The Work

The engagement focused on one thing: building a complete, accurate financial picture from the ground up.

Year-by-year transaction cleanup. Together we pulled data from various places it was stored, talked about the accuracy of each data set and made a chart of accounts and what would go into each category. Each year was reconciled against bank statements before moving to the next.

P&L construction. Once the underlying data was clean, we built a profit and loss statement for each of the three years. We worked together on how to interpret the report, with enough context to understand what each line meant and where to look when something seemed off.

Walk-through and handoff. Before the engagement closed, we spent dedicated time making sure they understood what was needed to maintain the data. How to read the P&L. What questions it could answer and what it couldn't. How to keep the books current going forward so the next three years didn't end up in the same place.

The Outcome

For the first time since starting the business, they had a complete financial picture — three years of clean, organized data and a P&L they could show others and stand behind the accuracy.

A real P&L for the first time.

Three years of income and expenses, organized and accurate — something they could read, share with their accountant, and use to make decisions.

A baseline to plan from.

With clean historical data in place, year-over-year comparisons became possible. Growth, margins, and spending patterns were visible in a way they'd never been.
